Blues
A Blue recognises a student who has represented Oxford in a Varsity fixture against Cambridge. The status of each sport, and the criteria athletes must meet, are determined and periodically reviewed by the Blues Committee.
The tiers
- Full Blue — granted in the most established and competitive sports.
- Discretionary Full Blue — clubs may upgrade Half Blues to Full Blues for athletes meeting additional sporting achievement and sportsmanship criteria set out in the Blues Constitution 2023, Appendix 3, at the discretion of their captains and with the approval of the Committee.
- Half Blue — covers a wider range of sports where Varsity competition exists but the Full Blue threshold has not been met.
The annual cycle
The Committee meets at least once per Oxford term — Michaelmas, Hilary and Trinity. Nominations must be submitted before the relevant term’s deadline to be considered at that meeting. Each nomination is debated and put to a formal motion.
Reviewing club status
A club’s Blues status is reviewed periodically by the Committee. The criteria published on each club’s page are the criteria currently in force.
