Rugby League

Discretionary Full Blue

Rugby League is a full contact sports played by two teams of thirteen players on a rectangular field.

About the club

Rugby League is a full contact sports played by two teams of thirteen players on a rectangular field. One of the two codes of rugby, it originated in Northern England in 1895 as a split from the Rugby Football Union. Rugby League is inclusive to all genders and levels of experience, and we welcome enquiries from those with a disability regarding the accessibility of Rugby League.

The club, recently voted BUCS Club of the Year (2022), is always on the lookout for new players. Whether you're a rugby league veteran or have never even seen a game, we welcome all players of all abilities - and pride ourselves on being one of the University's most welcoming clubs.

The club currently consists of two men's sides, the Blues and Maroons, and a women's squad. Both men's teams compete against other universities in BUCS, and the women's team arranges their own matches, often playing with the local Oxford Cavaliers. The teams compete throughout the season, with fixtures taking place on a weekly basis through Michaelmas and Hilary terms. The highlight of the year is the annual Varsity matches against Cambridge or our our "Derby Day" game against Oxford Brookes.

Come and add more Varsity wins to the OURLFC history!

Inter-college & Cuppers

Rugby league has opportunities for men and women to get involved at college level in an inter-college tournament in Trinity Term. For more information on how to participate, please contact a club committee member or your college's sports rep.

Blues criteria

Men's

Discretionary Full Blue

Up to 17 Half Blues are awarded to those who play in the Blues Varsity Match team at the captain’s discretion. Up to 13 of these can be upgraded to Discretionary Full Blues at the Captain’s discretion.

In order for Discretionary Full Blues to be awarded:

  1. The Men’s Blues Team must win promotion to BUCS Tier Southern 1A (applicable for seasons when the team plays in BUCS Tier 2), or
  2. Maintain or improve their position in BUCS Tier Southern 1A (in seasons where the team already competes in Tier 1 or higher).

Failure by the Blues Team to fulfil these criteria would result in only up to 17 Half Blues able to be awarded that year at the captain’s discretion following the Varsity Match.
