Modern Pentathlon

Full Blue

Modern Pentathlon is an exciting, dynamic sport comprising the five events of running, riding, swimming, shooting and fencing.

About the club

Modern Pentathlon is an exciting, dynamic sport comprising the five events of running, riding, swimming, shooting and fencing. The five events are normally competed over 2 days, apart from at the Olympics when they take place in a single day. Scores from each event are added together to determine the overall winner. Modern Pentathlon athletes need to have strength, endurance, quick reflexes and concentration, in order to meet the high demands of the sport. Modern Pentathlon is inclusive to all genders and levels of experience, and we welcome enquiries from those with a disability regarding the accessibility of Modern Pentathlon.

Oxford University Modern Pentathlon Association welcomes members of all levels. Many of our members take up pentathlon having never done any of the sports, others come from backgrounds in running, swimming, or fencing, and some cross over from Pony Club Tetrathlon. The club caters for complete beginners and experienced competitors alike and has had great success right up to international level; ex Oxford pentathletes Steph Cook and Emily de Riel took Olympic gold and silver in the women's event at Sydney 2000 and the club has produced several other international athletes.

There are opportunities to compete against other universities at BUCS and against Cambridge in an annual Varsity. We are proud to be a Pentathlon GB hub.

Inter-college & Cuppers

There is an inter-college competition in Hilary term. For more information on how to get involved at college level, please contact a member of the club or your college sports rep.
